Happy Salami Day!
We here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve love a good salami, and we know you do too! Today, on National Salami Day, we celebrate this delicious cured meat by delving into its history and lore.
A Salami by Any Other Name…
The word "salami" is derived from the Italian word "salame," which itself comes from the Latin word "salare," meaning "to salt." This speaks to the curing process that is essential to salami production. Salami is typically made from fermented sausage, although variations exist around the world.
Supernatural Salami
In Hungary, there is a legend of a giant salami-shaped monster called the Tűzleves (pronounced too-lesh-vesh). This fire sausage is said to be born from neglected sausages left to spoil over a fireplace. It rolls around, spewing flames and smoke, and is said to bring bad luck to those who encounter it.
So, the next time you slice into a salami, remember the rich history and legendary status of this delicious cured meat! Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we believe that even the most ordinary foods can hold extraordinary stories.
