A Spooktacularly Sweet Celebration: Haberdashery Celebrates Sweet Potato Day!

Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we love a good excuse for a party, and what better reason than Sweet Potato Day, a delicious national holiday observed every year on the Saturday before July 4th! This humble root vegetable boasts a rich history and surprising connection to the supernatural world! So, grab your favorite witches' brew (or a nice cup of sweet potato latte) and settle in as we delve into the world of the sweet potato!

Sweet Spuds: A History Dyed in Purple

The sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, is a member of the morning glory family and originated in Central and South America. Evidence suggests they were cultivated as far back as 8,000 years ago! Sweet potatoes come in a variety of colors, including the most common orange, but also surprising varieties like purple, yellow, and even white. These colorful variations aren't just for looks! The purple sweet potato, for instance, contains anthocyanins, a pigment also found in blueberries, which boasts a number of health benefits.

Mythical Munchies: Sweet Potatoes and the Jackalope

Speaking of unusual colors and strange occurrences, did you know that the sweet potato has been linked to a certain elusive cryptid - the Jackalope? Legends of the Jackalope, a rabbit with antelope horns, hail primarily from the American Midwest. Interestingly, folklore also suggests Jackalopes have a particular fondness for… you guessed it, sweet potatoes! Some stories claim Jackalopes will raid gardens for these tasty tubers, while others suggest they can be lured out with offerings of candied sweet potatoes. Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we wouldn't recommend leaving sweet potatoes out overnight, just in case!
