April 18
Velociraptor day
Happy National Velociraptor Awareness Day from the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve!
While velociraptors may not be the mythical beasts that haunt our campfire stories, these feathered predators were certainly terrifying in their own right. Today, on National Velociraptor Awareness Day (April 18th), we celebrate these cunning dinos and all they teach us about the wonders (and dangers) of prehistoric times!
Feathered Fiends: More Than Just Movie Magic
Unlike their Hollywood portrayals, velociraptors were smaller than a turkey, reaching only about 4 feet tall. However, what they lacked in size, they made up for in speed and intelligence. These agile hunters likely boasted incredible eyesight and a keen sense of smell, allowing them to stalk prey with deadly efficiency. Their most iconic feature, the enlarged claw on their second toe, was likely used for slashing and grappling during a takedown.
A Link to Local Legend?
While velociraptors themselves are firmly rooted in the past, their presence hints at a fascinating connection to a much more mysterious cryptid: the Jersey Devil. Legends of this winged, bipedal creature with a horse-like head have haunted the Pine Barrens of New Jersey for centuries. Could these descriptions be distorted memories of encounters with velociraptors millions of years ago? Perhaps the Jersey Devil is a cryptid echo of a bygone era, a reminder of the terrifying beauty of the prehistoric world.
