Poutine Day
Happy Poutine Day from the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve!
Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we take our celebrations seriously, and that includes Poutine Day! This delicious Québécois dish, a symphony of french fries, cheese curds, and gravy, is a true national treasure (and a personal favorite of our resident Sasquatch, Claude). But did you know that poutine's origins are shrouded in mystery, much like the creatures we house here at the Preserve?
The Legend of Poutine
There are many stories about the creation of poutine, each as unique and flavorful as the dish itself. One tale claims that it originated in the early 20th century, when a restaurant owner in Warwick, Quebec, decided to add cheese curds to leftover fries. Another story suggests that poutine was a wartime invention, a way to stretch cheese rations by adding them to french fries.
But our favorite legend here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve is a bit more...peculiar. Local folklore tells the tale of "Le Poutineux," a mischievous swamp creature with a bottomless stomach and an insatiable craving for cheese curds. Legend has it that Le Poutineux would sneak into kitchens at night, devouring cheese curds and leaving behind a trail of greasy fries in his wake. To appease the creature, people began leaving bowls of fries and cheese curds on their doorsteps. Over time, this offering evolved into the poutine we know and love today.
Whether this story is true or not, one thing's for sure: poutine is a delicious and beloved dish. Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we celebrate Poutine Day by offering a special poutine made with cheese curds sourced from a local farm (and rumors are, Claude might even make an appearance to share his secret gravy recipe!). So come on down, celebrate Poutine Day with us, and maybe, just maybe, you'll catch a glimpse of Le Poutineux yourself!
