chocolate day

Happy International Chocolate Day from the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve!

Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we take our treats seriously, and what better day to celebrate than International Chocolate Day? But did you know chocolate has a history that's as mysterious and captivating as some of the cryptids we house here?

The cocoa bean, the heart of all things chocolate, was first cultivated by the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. The Mayans revered it as a gift from the gods, using it in ceremonies and even as currency. Legends speak of a feathered serpent god, Kukulkan, who gifted humans with the cacao plant. While Kukulkan may not be sunning himself in our enclosures (yet!), the Mayan appreciation for chocolate is undeniable.

Fast forward to Europe, where chocolate was shrouded in secrecy for quite some time. It was a luxury reserved for the elite, and some even believed it possessed aphrodisiacal properties! Perhaps that's why some believe a mischievous imp-like creature called the Chocolatl dwells in the shadows of cocoa plantations, ensuring a bountiful harvest for those who appease it with offerings (of chocolate, of course).

Whether it's the divine gifts of Mayan gods or the playful tricks of a legendary Chocolatl, there's no denying the mystique surrounding this delicious treat. So this International Chocolate Day, as you savor that sweet, decadent piece of chocolate, take a moment to appreciate the fascinating history and folklore that swirls around this beloved confection. After all, you never know, maybe there is a bit of magic in every bite!

Now, if you'll excuse us, we here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve have some taste testing to do. There's a rumor that our resident Bigfoot has a particular fondness for a certain type of chocolate chip cookie...
