Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve Celebrates Skyscraper Day

June 29th is Skyscraper Day, a day to appreciate the architectural marvels that grace our skylines. These towering structures are a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess. But did you know that skyscrapers might have inspired some of the world's most famous cryptids?

Gargoyles and Grotesques

For centuries, architects have adorned skyscrapers with gargoyles and grotesques. These fantastical creatures were originally believed to ward off evil spirits. But over time, they have taken on a life of their own in folklore and fiction. Perhaps the most famous example is King Kong, the giant ape who terrorized New York City in the 1933 film. King Kong was likely inspired in part by the gargoyles that adorned the Empire State Building, which was then the world's tallest building.

Modern Day Cryptids

Even today, reports of skyscraper-dwelling cryptids persist. In 2017, there were reports of a giant bat-like creature living on the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago. These reports were likely hoaxes, but they highlight the enduring fascination with skyscraper cryptids.

The Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve

Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we celebrate all things cryptid, including the creatures that may or may not live on our skyscrapers. We believe that even the most fantastical creatures deserve our respect and protection. So, this Skyscraper Day, take a look up at the towering structures around you. Who knows? You might just see a glimpse of a winged monster or a giant ape swinging from the top.
