Happy Necktie Day from the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve!

Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we take our neckwear seriously – especially on National Necktie Day, June 22nd! While some might scoff at the idea of a necktie holiday, we see it as a chance to celebrate a garment with a long and fascinating history – and one that's not without its mysterious connections!

Neckties can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where men of high status wore elaborately decorated cravats. The cravat evolved over the centuries, becoming a fashion statement for European elites by the 17th century. But did you know that some believe the cravat's origin story might have a more…supernatural…beginning?

Legend has it that during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), Croatian mercenaries arrived in France sporting distinctive neck scarves. The French, ever the trendsetters, adopted the look, calling it la cravatte after the Croatian word for "Croats." However, some whispers suggest these weren't just scarves – they were enchanted talismans imbued with the mercenaries' courage and fighting spirit. Perhaps that's why a well-chosen tie can still imbue the wearer with a sense of confidence and power!

Of course, here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we can't resist mentioning a necktie-related cryptid: the Hidebehind. This shapeshifting creature from Scottish folklore is said to appear as a bale of cloth by day, transforming into a monstrous beast at night. While we wouldn't recommend using a Hidebehind as actual neckwear (safety first!), it does serve as a reminder of the potential power – and hidden mysteries – that can reside within even the most ordinary articles of clothing.

So, this National Necktie Day, we encourage you to celebrate the necktie! Dig out that favorite tie in your closet, whether it's a classic power tie or a quirky conversation starter. And who knows, maybe with the right tie, you too can channel your inner legendary confidence (and hopefully avoid any encounters with mischievous Hidebehinds). Happy tying!
