Pig Day
Happy Pig Day from the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve!
At the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we celebrate all things unusual and fascinating, and what's more peculiar than a day dedicated to our favorite snouted friends: pigs? Pig Day, observed every July 1st, is a day to appreciate these intelligent and social creatures. But did you know that pigs have a long and storied history, intertwined with myth and folklore?
Swans may be graceful and elegant, but in some cultures, pigs hold a special place. In Celtic mythology, the fearsome demon Gwynn ap Nudd, king of the underworld, is often depicted riding a black boar. In Norse mythology, the monstrous boar Saehrimnir resides in Valhalla, providing an endless feast for the Einherjar, the fallen Viking warriors. Even closer to home, Native American folklore features benign pig spirits who represent abundance and prosperity.
Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we're particularly fond of the legend of the Heihu, a monstrous black boar said to roam the wilds of China. This creature is said to possess immense strength and ferocity, and some folktales claim it can even control the weather! While we haven't encountered any Heihu ourselves (yet!), it serves as a reminder of the power and mystery that pigs can embody.
So, this Pig Day, we encourage you to celebrate these extraordinary animals! Visit a local farm sanctuary, learn more about pig intelligence, or perhaps enjoy a delicious (and ethically sourced) pork dish. And who knows, maybe you'll even dream up your own legend about a fantastical pig creature!
