Rum day
Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve Celebrates Rum Day
Ahoy, mateys! Today we raise a glass (or tankard, or even a coconut shell) to celebrate National Rum Day, a day dedicated to the Caribbean's favorite spirit! But did you know that rum has a long and storied history, rumored to be connected to a mythical creature?
What is Rum Day?
National Rum Day is a relatively new holiday, first celebrated in 1961 by the Puerto Rican Rum Producers Association. It's a day to appreciate the delicious taste of rum and its many uses in cocktails, cooking, and even cleaning (though we recommend sticking to the drinking kind!).
Rum and the Sea Serpent
According to some legends, sailors in the Caribbean would offer rum to appease the mighty sea serpent, a monstrous creature said to lurk in the depths of the ocean. The serpent, supposedly appeased by the offering, would grant safe passage to the sailors. While the existence of a sea serpent is unlikely, the legend highlights the importance of rum in Caribbean culture and folklore.
