Cabbage Day

Happy Cabbage Day!

Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we love all holidays, even the odd ones like Cabbage Day! But why celebrate this leafy green, you ask? Well, settle in, crypto-enthusiasts, because Cabbage Day has a surprisingly mysterious past.

There isn't one definitive origin story for Cabbage Day. Some claim it goes back to medieval Europe, where cabbages were a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Others believe it stems from ancient Celtic traditions, where cabbages were used in divination rituals – perhaps to predict the coming winter's bounty or ward off evil spirits (like the Cabbage-Cailleach, a legendary Scottish crone said to stir up winter storms with her staff!).

Here in America, Cabbage Day seems to have popped up in the 19th century, possibly as a celebration of the arrival of spring cabbages. However, there's also a whisper of a more fantastical origin. Legends speak of a race of benevolent cabbage people who crash-landed on Earth in a vegetable spaceship long ago. These cabbage folk, known as the "Brassicae," supposedly shared their knowledge of agriculture with humanity in exchange for safe haven. Cabbage Day, the rumor goes, is a secret tribute to these cosmic cabbage colleagues!

Whether rooted in history, folklore, or a touch of the fantastical, Cabbage Day is a great excuse to celebrate this delightful (and nutritious!) vegetable. Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we'll be incorporating some cabbage into our enrichment activities for our cryptids. Who knows, maybe Bigfoot enjoys a good coleslaw, or perhaps the Loch Ness Monster prefers her kippers served on a bed of creamed cabbage!

So, this Cabbage Day, we encourage you to embrace the mystery and enjoy some delicious cabbage in whatever way you see fit. Just remember, the next time you take a bite of coleslaw, you might be communing with ancient spirits, celebrating alien visitors, or simply enjoying a tasty, traditional food!
