Lion Facts
* Lions are the second-largest big cat species in the world, after tigers.
* Male lions are easily recognized by their flowing manes, which can reach lengths of up to three feet!
* Lions are social creatures that live in groups called prides. Prides typically consist of several related females, their cubs, and one or two males.
* Lions are apex predators, meaning they sit at the top of the food chain. They primarily hunt large prey animals such as zebras, wildebeests, and antelopes.
Mythical Lions
Lions have also inspired numerous mythical creatures throughout history. In Chinese mythology, the guardian lion statues known as "shih shens" are believed to ward off evil spirits.
Perhaps the most interesting lion-like cryptid is the Chinese guardian lion statues known as "shih shens." These imposing statues are often depicted with a muscular body, a fierce expression, and a curled tail. They are believed to possess powerful protective abilities and are frequently placed at the entrances of temples, palaces, and other important buildings to ward off evil spirits.
