Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve Celebrates World Tea Day!
Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we take our beverage breaks very seriously, especially when it comes to tea! In honor of World Tea Day, we're steeping up the festivities with some fascinating facts about this delightful drink, its historical connection to the supernatural, and of course, a few curious cryptid connections...
Tea: A Celestial Elixir
Tea has been enjoyed for millennia, originating in China as far back as 2737 BC. Legend has it that the Chinese emperor Shen Nung accidentally discovered tea when leaves from a Camellia sinensis tree blew into his boiling cup of water. The resulting brew invigorated the emperor, and thus, tea was born!
Tea and the Occult
Tea has long been associated with mindfulness and meditation, particularly in Eastern cultures. This association has bled into the realm of the occult, with tea leaves sometimes used in divination practices like tasseography, where readers interpret symbols left behind in a teacup after consumption. Here at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve, we wouldn't recommend using our Swamp Sasquatch Surprise tea for tasseography – the murky depths of that brew might be a bit too much to decipher!
A Siren's Serenade
Speaking of mythical creatures, there's an old Japanese legend about a sea monster with the head of a monkey, the body of a fish, and a fondness for green tea. This creature, known as the Amabie, was said to appear during times of trouble, offering pronouncements of good health and prosperity. The Amabie would instruct people to drink green tea to ward off illness and disaster. While we haven't sighted any Amabie at the Haberdashery Cryptid Preserve (yet!), we can certainly vouch for the mood-boosting properties of a good cup of tea.
